A head-on collision on South Carpenter Road west of Turlock early Wednesday killed one driver and sent the other to a hospital with major injuries.
Daniel Vasquez, 40, of Gustine was driving a GMC Envoy north on South Carpenter, south of West Main Avenue, shortly after 6:20 a.m. He saw a Volkswagen Golf coming toward him in his lane, he told California Highway Patrol officers, but was unable to avoid a collision.
The investigation indicates the VW driver – 35-year-old Hugo Sanchez-Rebollar of Modesto – was passing another vehicle. The crash left Vasquez’s SUV in the roadway and the Volkswagen on the east shoulder. Both drivers were alone in their vehicles and were wearing safety restraints, the CHP reported.
Vasquez suffered major injuries, including broken ribs, and was taken to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. Sanchez-Rebollar was dead at the scene, said CHP Sgt. Fabio Serrato.
The first CHP officers on the scene saw possible witnesses in a nearby field and are looking to interview them, Serrato said. Logs of 911 calls will be reviewed to see if anyone who called in the crash witnessed what happened, he said.
Witnesses to the crash are asked to contact the Modesto-area CHP office at 209-545-7440.
