Modesto police arrested two men early Sunday believed to be linked to as many as 60 burglary victims and thousands of dollars in stolen goods, authorities said.
During the arrest, the men were found with an iPod engraved with "Happy 10th birthday Conner," police reported. Officers recognized it from a report made Saturday. "Great," the owners told police when they heard they'd get the iPod back. "But where's the other stuff?"
It didn't take police long to find it. One of the men arrested was on probation for a burglary conviction. Officers found his home and spent Sunday packing two pickup-truck loads of goods from the house in the 200 block of Emerson Avenue, which the men shared. Computers, golf clubs, purses, luggage and credit cards were among the items.
Officer Monty Ownbey and reserve officer Robert Minter arrested Howland P. Seuga, 37, and Nickolas D. Krauth, 27, both of Modesto, about 4:30 a.m. near Marina Apartments, at 2700 Marina Drive, after a call of an auto burglary in progress. Police Sgt. Ed Steele said the men were found with sunglasses, binoculars and compact discs.
The men's girlfriends, found at the house on Emerson, said the men brought home "bucket loads of property" at least four times a week, about $400 in goods and drugs, Steele said.
Police arrested the men's landlord, Kelly Hansen, on suspicion of taking stolen property in lieu of rent, along with several other violations. He was cited and released, authorities said.
Krauth and Seuga were held at the county jail on suspicion of burglary, possession of stolen goods and conspiracy. Krauth also was held on more than $100,000 bail on a suspected probation violation and two drug-related warrants.
The recovered property will be on display this week. Police ask people who believe they may have been victims to call Detective Gary Martinez at 572-9533 for more information.
