Public, private, technical, art, vocational, military -- counselors from all types of colleges will be at Modesto Junior College on Tuesday to answer questions and provide information about applying to their campuses.
Representatives from more than 55 universities will attend MJC's Transfer Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and College Night from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Both are free and open to everyone, especially those planning to attend college or who are in college.
"This is probably the best opportunity for students and their parents to come and talk to pretty much all UCs and CSUs at one time, one location," said June Hunt, MJC Career Development and Transfer Center technician and event organizer.
Many universities that don't usually come to MJC plan to attend, Hunt said, including UCLA; California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo; the University of California at Berkeley; and the University of California at Davis.
The event allows people to get answers to questions such as "What's the difference between a California State University and University of California; a private and public school?" and "Which majors are hardest to get into?" Hunt said.
"Especially for many of our families, where the parents didn't go to college, they have a lot of questions," she said.
Transfer Day: People can find out how to transfer from a community college to a university, several of which guarantee transfers to eligible MJC students. Those universities include University of California campuses in Santa Cruz, Irvine, Riverside, Merced and Santa Barbara; California State University campuses in San Jose, Stanislaus, Sacramento, Humboldt and Chico; the University of the Pacific in Stockton; and Chapman University.
College Night: Representatives will staff booths to offer pamphlets and answer questions about admissions, academic programs, financial aid and student life. A panel discussion will start at 5:30 p.m.
Other participating colleges include: the University of California at San Diego; California State University, Fresno, East Bay, Monterey Bay, San Francisco and Sonoma; Academy of Art College in San Francisco; Brooks Institute of Photography; DeVry University; Holy Names College; and Fresno Pacific University.
Transfer Day and College Night will take place at MJC's east campus, 435 College Ave., in the Student Center rotunda. For more information, call the Transfer Center at 575-6239.
