HISPANIC LEADERSHIP COUNCIL: The speakers for Friday's meeting of the Hispanic Leadership Council will be Bob Dittman, teacher, mountain climber, photographer and adventurer, and Jerry Emery, principal at the Petersen Alternative Center for Education and Juvenile Hall. They will speak about their visions and goals for education at the 7 a.m. meeting. The meeting will be at El Concilio Community Center, 1314 H St. The weekly meetings offer an excellent opportunity to network, and the public is invited.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL BAND: High school marching bands are coming to town. On Saturday, starting at 5 p.m., the bands will compete at Johansen High School on Claus Road. There is a $10 entrance fee and free parking. Bands from Modesto, Fresno and Los Banos will be competing.

SHRINERS TO HOST CLINIC: A free screening clinic will be held for children with orthopedic conditions, spinal cord injuries and burns. Health care professionals will screen children for possible acceptance into the medical programs offered by Shriners Hospitals for Children in Northern California. ITALIAN DINNER: The Modesto Breakfast Lions and the Sylvan Club will jointly present an Italian Dinner on Saturday from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Sylvan Clubhouse, 2445 Sylvan Ave. The dinner will feature chicken cacciatore, fettuccini, vegetables, salad, beverage, bread and desert. The event benefits projects for sight, hearing and youth, beautifying Modesto through the Modesto Garden Club and feeding the disadvantaged through the Riverbank Food Bank.

MICROCHIP CLINIC: The Animal Services Auxiliary and Banfield Pet Hospital will sponsor a microchip clinic on Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at PetSmart on McHenry Avenue. The microchip package includes a physical from Banfield. After purchasing the microchip package special, you will receive an instant coupon from Banfield and a $25 rebate. LEARN ABOUT OUTDOORS: Ever wonder how Table Mountain got to look that way? You can find the answer during a series of weekend hikes and evening lectures at the New Melones Lake Visitor Center. At 7 p.m. today, park ranger Alex Encoyand will discuss "Birds of Prey." Soar with an eagle and hunt fish with an osprey as Encoyand explains their feeding and hunting habits. On Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m., Encoyand will lead an expedition to the "Wildlands of Table Mountain," exploring the natural history of the Table Mountain area, including its geological formation and the effects of the California Gold Rush.
