The Modesto Police Department has received a grant to buy new equipment and fund traffic enforcement targeting motorcycle traffic violations, drunken driving, speeding, driving with a suspended or revoked license, street racing, red light running and seat belt violations. The department will use the $298,000 grant, awarded by the state Office of Traffic Safety, to deal with increased traffic safety problems and reduce the number of fatalities and injuries. The department will use the money to buy speed enforcement radars, alcohol screening devices and a traffic collision reconstruction system. The grant will fund overtime pay for officers to conduct sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols and patrol areas traveled by motorcycles. The officers will be cracking down on traffic violations made by motorcyclists, police said.
