Olsen, Muratore, Geer have early leads in Modesto council races

Modesto City Councilwoman Kristin Olsen jumped to an early lead over challenger Joe Cataline in the race for a City Council seat that represents north-central Modesto.

She has 64 percent, or 1,389, of the votes tallied so far by the Stanislaus County Clerk-Recorder�s Office.

The election is the city�s first in which voters are choosing candidates by geographic districts instead of in citywide races.

Real estate consultant Joe Muratore has an edge in District 2, which covers the La Loma, Creekside and airport neighborhoods. He has 52 percent, or 905 votes, against teacher Jeff Perine and community activist Robert Stanford. Perine has 36 percent with 624 votes and Stanford has 12 percent with 209 votes.

Muratore needs 50 percent plus one vote to avoid a runoff.

In District 4, which covers south and west Modesto, federal security Dave Geer has a slight lead over former sailor Al Nava. Precincts from that district typically have the lowest turnout in the city.

Geer has 280 votes over Nava�s 226.
