Top spellers will compete in the Stanislaus County spelling bee championships Wednesday and Nov. 12.
The Elementary Spelling Championship, for children in grades four through six, is Wednesday at Johansen High School, 641 Norseman Drive, Modesto.
The Junior High Spelling Championship, for those in grades seven and eight, is scheduled Nov. 12 at the Martin G. Petersen Event Center, 720 12th St., Modesto.
Sponsored by the Stanislaus County Office of Education, both events are open to the public and begin at 5 p.m. Participants come from public and private schools across the county.
The top two spellers in the Elementary Spelling Championship will represent Stanislaus County at the state competition in Sonoma on May 15.
The top two spellers in the Junior High Spelling Championship will represent the county at the state competition in San Rafael on May 8.
The third-place speller in each event will serve as an alternate.
