Shot twice and hospitalized, suspect named in Modesto burglary

Authorities have released the name of the residential burglary suspect shot by an off-duty Modesto police officer Sunday afternoon.

Modesto police Sgt. Brian Findlen identified the suspect Monday as Glen Dean Carey, 24, of Modesto. He remains in a Modesto hospital under armed guard.

Authorities are not releasing the name of the officer to ensure his and his family's safety. Findlen said the officer and his family live on the street where the burglary took place.

Findlen said the officer is a 27-year veteran of the Modesto Police Department.

The officer called 911 about 4:50 p.m. Sunday after hearing an alarm at a neighbor's home. Findlen said the officer watched the home as he waited for patrol officers.

Findlen said the off-duty officer saw the suspect leave the back of the house and confronted him in a side yard.

"We do believe that Mr. Carey was armed with a firearm that we believe was stolen from the home," Findlen said. "During this encounter, the officer shot the suspect twice."

Findlen would not provide more details, but said it's rare for officers to use deadly force and that it generally is used when there is imminent danger to an officer or others.

The burglary and shooting took place in a residential neighborhood near Citrus Drive and East Orangeburg Avenue, just west of Coffee Road. Findlen said no one was home during the burglary.

Carey has been arrested on suspicion of residential burglary, a felony, and will be booked at the jail once he is released from the hospital, Findlen said.

The officer remains on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings. Modesto police and the Stanislaus County district attorney's office continue to investigate.
