EDUCATION CUTS TO BE PROTESTED: The public is invited to a "Candlelight Vigil for Education" at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the quad on Modesto Junior College's East Campus, 435 College Ave. Student organizers said they want to give people a chance to express disappointment and outrage over state budget cuts to education. People are encouraged to bring signs.
BUDGET WORKSHOP PLANNED: The Modesto City Schools trustees will meet Monday for an hourlong budget study session. Also on the agenda, trustees will consider replacing gas lines at Beyer High School. The lines are so decomposed that Pacific Gas & Electric Co. will not restore gas to the campus until the lines are fixed. That means there is no internal heat, affecting classrooms, the kitchen, pool heater and science labs, according to the agenda. Cost is estimated at $94,000 and will be paid for by the deferred maintenance fund. Trustees also will consider submitting an application to the state to start a culinary arts program at Downey High School. In closed session, trustees will discuss Superintendent Arturo Flores' goals for 2009-10. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. in the district boardroom, 426 Locust St.
