IRISH AUTHORS' NIGHT

When: Today, 6:30 p.m.

Where: The Fruit Yard Restaurant, 7948 Yosemite Blvd.

Info: Dinner event in the banquet room. A complete dinner with a choice of New York steak, teriyaki chicken or beef lasagna. Entertainment will include live Celtic music, bagpipers from the Ripon Police and Fire Pipe Band and, of course, poetry readings of famous Irish bards. Cost is $26. WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT LUNCHEON

When: Wednesday, 12:30 p.m.

Where: Modesto DoubleTree Hotel, Garden Terrace, 1150 Ninth St.

Info: Women's Empowerment Group, a nonprofit women's support and networking organization will hold a meet-and-greet for the president of the Modesto Police Officers Association, Tony Arguelles, and other community leaders. SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL LUNCHEON

When: Thursday, 12:15 to 1:15 p.m.

Where: The Seasons, 945 McHenry Ave.

Info: Leah Knipe, community outreach coordinator for the Modesto Church of the Brethren, will speak about New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina. Lunch is $13. To register call, Jo Ann Found at 985-0074.

Info: The Disability Resource Agency for Independent Living will hold an open house. Roe Darnell, chancellor and chief executive officer of the Yosemite Community College District, will be the keynote speaker. For more information, call 521-7260.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Where: Catholic Charities

Info: Volunteers are needed to serve seniors who are dependent upon others for transportation to doctor's appointments and grocery stores. Volunteers may use their own car or drive our vans. Ceres COMPUTERS FOR SENIORS

When: Mondays, 5:30 to 7 p.m., through Nov. 16

Where: Ceres Community Center, Computer Lab, 2701 Fourth St.

Info: The Ceres Recreation Department is offering "Introduction to Computers for Seniors." The course includes basic computer operation, an introduction to operating systems, software applications and file storage. Prerequisites are rudimentary knowledge of how to operate a mouse, keyboard, and how to turn a computer on and off. Preregistration is required. Hughson MARCH FOR BABIES RELAY

When: Saturday, noon to 9 p.m.

Where: Hughson High School, football field, 7419 E. Whitmore Ave.

Info: The March of Dimes will hold "March for Babies Relay." The event represents the nine months of pregnancy. There will be games, entertainment, food and raffle baskets. The event ends with a "Light the Lantern" ceremony, where you can honor healthy babies, preterm babies, babies with a birth defect or remember a baby who did not survive.
