YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK - The park has announced the completion of a $800,000 rehabilitation of the Half Dome Overlook.

The overlook, located on Big Oak Flat Road, is the first chance many visitors have to see Yosemite Valley's iconic features, such as Half Dome framed between the granite walls of El Capitan and the cliffs of Glacier Point. Yosemite officials said that before the overlook's makeover, it was easy to miss.

The project, which includes a new parking area and new walkways, was finished this month.

The paths now meet accessibility standards and new exhibits educate visitors about the park, Yosemite officials said. The project also included rehabilitation of paths that eroded from overuse and the construction of natural barriers to prevent additional trails from being created.

A bronze relief model allows visitors to the overlook to see details of Half Dome.

The project is part of the Yosemite Fund's 15-year effort to improve the park's marquee viewpoints. Donors have supported projects to rehabilitate overlooks at Tunnel View, Olmstead Point, Glacier Point and the approach to Yosemite Falls.

The Yosemite Fund is a nonprofit organization that provides private funding and resources for projects that preserve, protect or enhance Yosemite National Park.
