Mechanical problems forced a single-engine plane to make an emergency landing Tuesday morning in a bean field between Westley and Vernalis, fire officials said. The six-seat plane's two occupants were not injured, and there was no fire damage, said Division Chief Steve Hall of the West Stanislaus County Fire Protection District.
The landing occurred about 10:15 a.m. in the field near West Gaffery Road.
Hall said a belt came loose on the Piper Malibu plane, which flew out of Concord. He said smoke filled the cockpit and forced the pilot to land.
