A three-alarm fire damaged a business in a Crows Landing Road strip mall early Saturday, Modesto fire officials said. There were no reports of injuries.
Modesto Fire Investigator Craig Davis was on patrol, looking for people setting off illegal fireworks, when he spotted flames inside the business and reported the fire at 12:06 a.m., said Battalion Chief Dan Hinshaw.
Firefighters had the blaze under control within 45 minutes but were on scene until 3:32 a.m. checking for hot spots, mopping up and investigating.
The fire occurred at 1918 Crows Landing Road, between East Hatch Road and East Whitmore Avenue.
Firefighters contained the blaze to one building, Hinshaw said, but he said a building that shares an adjoining wall and door suffered smoke damage. The door was open, letting the smoke in.
Modesto sent two truck and seven engine companies to the fire. Ceres sent one truck company. Hinshaw said 30 firefighters responded.
He said the building sustained heavy damage, but he did not have a dollar estimate. The fire remains under investigation.
