WATERFORD — Garrett Leandro of Waterford was identified Saturday by authorities as the 17-year-old who drown Friday after diving into a Modesto Irrigation District canal.

Garrett was going to be a junior at Waterford High School, where he was a lineman on the football team.

"He was just a good kid with a big heart. Everyone loved him," said Dave Hill, Waterford's varsity football coach. "The whole junior class is a close-knit group of kids. This is tough on them."

Garrett dove into the canal about 1:30 p.m. near Reinway and Pecan avenues in Waterford. When he did not resurface, emergency crews were called. His body was found more than a mile downstream about an hour later.
