California State University, Stanislaus, photographer Cary Edmondson was the grand gold medal winner in the Photographer of the Year competition sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. His work was selected over that of 31 other finalists from universities around the country.

A staff member at CSU, Stanislaus, since May 2007, Edmondson has won a number of awards in the University Photographers' Association of America competition. Stanislaus State University - CSU Stanislaus Photographer Cary Edmondson, has been named the winner of the Photographer of the Year competition by the international organization, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

The Classified Senate at Columbia College has been named a Model Classified Senate by the California Community Colleges Classified Senate. The honor recognizes the entity for its participation in college governance and general operations. The Classified Senate is the nonteaching counterpart to the Faculty Senate. Leaders of the Columbia Senate include Lonnie Blansit, current president, and Doralyn Foletti, past president.

The Community Hospice Foundation presented awards for philanthropy and leadership at its 30-year anniversary gala May 30. The John and June Rogers Philanthropic Award was presented to Modesto resident Sue Marshall in recognition of her contributions as a foundation board member. Marshall initiated Golf Fore Hospice and Wranglin' for Hospice, both major fund-raisers.

Modesto dentist Bruce Valentine received the Julio and Aileen Gallo Leadership Award. Valentine is a long-standing board member and is past president of the board at Community Hospice.

Livingston Medical Group, one of California's oldest nonprofit community health centers, has named John S. Alexander as its new chief executive officer. Alexander previously served as the executive director of Merced County Health Care Consortium. He replaces Aurora Garcia, who retired after 39 years with Livingston Medical Group, 33 of them as its head. The medical group serves low-income families in Livingston, Delhi, Stevinson, Hilmar, Cressey and Ballico.

Fund raising: The annual Benefit Bowl at McHenry Bowl raised $18,000 for the Stanislaus Literacy Center.

Collegiate recognition:

Nicole R. Loeffler, daughter of Florence and Michael Loeffler of Modesto, received a medical degree from New York Medical College. She will do her residency in pediatrics at Oakland Children's Hospital.

Nancy Rivera, a 2006 graduate of Ceres High School and a student at the University of California at Davis, was selected to go to the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center in Boston for the 2009 Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences Program, a nine-week mentored research and lab experience.

Disabled American Veterans, Atwater-Merced Chapter 31 presented its Merced College scholarship award to Marianna Mojica, a Marine Corps Iraq war veteran.

Appointments: Caroline Dias as community representative to the Stanislaus Child Development Local Planning Council.

Certifications: Elaine Slaughter with the Management Alternative in Modesto, the certified community association manager designation from the California Association of Community Managers.

Fifty-three electricians from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 684 in Modesto, for completion of a new job site Code of Excellence training program, developed by the union and the National Electrical Contractors Association.
