An eighth-grader from Stanislaus County came in fifth in the 2009 California State Junior High Spelling Bee Championship. Ashlyn Applegate is an eighth-grader at Hart-Ransom Charter School. The spelling bee was held May 9 in San Rafael, with 51 seventh-, eighth- and ninth-graders from 29 counties throughout California.
