Another rite of spring — the start of firewood collection in the Stanislaus National Forest — will happen Wednesday.

The public can get permits to gather dead and downed wood at $25 for each 2½ cords.

The maximum is 10 cords per household.

The collectors must follow safety rules, including spark arrestors on their chain saws, and stay off roads that are still muddy.

The firewood season typically runs through November, but this can change with weather and road conditions.

Permits will be available starting Monday at forest offices:

  • Headquarters: 19777 Greenley Road, Sonora, 532-3671
  • Mi-Wok Ranger Station: Highway 108, Mi-Wuk Village, 586-3234
  • Summit Ranger Station: Highway 108, Pinecrest, 965-3434
  • Groveland Ranger Station: Highway 120, Buck Meadows, 962-7825
  • Calaveras Ranger Station: Highway 4, Hathaway Pines, 795-1381.

Permits also can be obtained online at www.fs.fed.us/r5/stanislaus/permits/fuelwood.
