No parole in attack on spouse

A Modesto man who was convicted of stabbing his estranged wife with a bayonet in 1993 has been denied parole, the Stanislaus County district attorney's office said Tuesday. Hector Carrera, 67, was convicted of attempted murder in 1993 and was sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison with the possibility of parole.

The judge sentenced Carrera to an additional three years for battery on a spouse and one additional year for using a knife in the attack. Deputy District Attorney John Baker appeared at the Nov. 20 parole hearing and argued for continued confinement based on Carrera's continued danger to society.

According to court documents, Carrera attacked his wife after she called police to have him removed from her home. He stabbed her several times in the abdomen. He told a probation officer he was angry and does not remember how the incident happened.

According to authorities, the attack stopped when Carrera's 14-year-old son struck his father on the head with a fence post, knocking him unconscious. Carrera was denied parole in 2007, and he will be scheduled for a parole hearing in 2010.
