A Ceres man was attacked and critically injured Wednesday afternoon while doing yard work at a south Modesto home, according to Stanislaus County sheriff's officials. The victim appeared to be in his 70s, and sheriff's officials did not release his name to ensure his safety.

He was taken by ambulance to a Modesto hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition Wednesday night, said deputy Tom Letras, a sheriff's spokesman. The attack occurred at about 3:45 p.m. in front of the home in the 1600 block of Morgan Road, just south of East Hatch Road and west of Highway 99.

Letras said the man was doing yard work in front of a vacant house, but he did not live there. Sheriff's officials did not know whether he was working for the homeowner. Letras said neighbors called 911 to report the man was down on the ground in front of the house.

Authorities arrived and found the man with severe head injuries, and it appeared he was attacked, Letras said. Sheriff's officials ask anyone with information about this crime to call sheriff's Detective Jon McQueary at 525-7099.
