IRISH AUTHORS' NIGHT

When: Oct. 18, 6:30 p.m.

Where: Fruit Yard Restaurant, at Geer-Albers Road and Highway 132 between Empire and Waterford

Info: The Irish Cultural Society of Stanislaus County will host Irish Authors' Night. Organizers said Irish bards will expound, dinner will be served and there will be live Celtic music throughout the evening, as well as bagpipers from the Emerald Isle Pipe Band. Tickets are $26. TRIP TO NASHVILLE

When: Dec. 2

Info: Final payment is due Wednesday for the Traveleers' Travel Club's trip to Nashville, Tenn. The group's Nashville holiday special departs Dec. 2 for a five-day stay at the Opryland Hotel. Transportation from Modesto to the airport, hotel stay, some meals and tickets to all performances are included. Cost is $1,735 per person, double occupancy. HERITAGE TROUT PRESENTATION

Where: Mancini Senior Center, 716 Tuolumne Blvd.

Info: Stanislaus Fly Fishers is presenting a special program by Gregg Whitley. He will be presenting an overview of heritage trout, California golden trout, McCloud River rainbow trout, the coastal cutthroat and the beautiful places where they swim. Cost is free. SCREENINGS FOR CHILDREN

Info: Children with joint, spinal or burn deformities can receive free screenings for possible treatment at the Shriners Hospital in Sacramento. Families should bring copies of medical records, birth certificates, divorce decrees or custody agreements, and immunization records. CAR WASH

Info: MJC Forestry and Natural Resource Management Club is having a car wash at the east campus ag parking lot on Coldwell Avenue. $5 donation.

CAMELLIA SOCIETY MEETING

When: Sunday, 1:30 p.m.

Where: Coldwell Banker Building, 220 Standiford Ave.

Info: Program includes information on Gallo Gardens and the American Camellia Society, participating in its big show in March, as well as tips on how to disbud and grow camellias from seed. Visitors welcome.

OPEN HOUSE

Info: The Salvation Army Red Shield is having an open house. Take a tour and learn what the Red Shield offers the community. LIVING ROSARY

Info: The Catholic Social Service Guild is presenting a living rosary. Each Catholic parish and its priest and Central Catholic High School with its chaplain will be saying a decade of the rosary celebrating this month of the rosary. Everyone is invited to this interparish devotion to Mary.

COUNTRY CROSSROADS QUILTERS MEETING

When: Tuesday, 7 p.m.

Info: Author, designer and quilter Christine Barnes will be speaking on the importance of color. This meeting will help anyone who wants to become better at selecting fabrics and colors to use in his or her sewing. Turlock

OPEN HOUSE AND SAFETY FAIR

Info: Bring your families and enjoy a day with the Turlock police at the third annual Turlock Police Department Open House and Safety Fair. Members of the department will be providing information about the department, crime prevention and safety. Tours of the facility will be available. Hot dogs and drinks will be provided.
