Councilwoman hopes to create Modesto sports panel

last updated: October 06, 2008 06:44:34 AM

The Modesto Relays' run to Sacramento has Councilwoman Kristin Olsen looking for ways to lure new sporting events to the city.

She's asking her colleagues on the City Council to create a volunteer commission that would cultivate sports and keep Modesto on the front burner for organizers of new attractions.

"Rather than sit back and mourn what we've lost, I'd like to start working on what we can do now," she said.

Olsen played a big role in bringing the Amgen Tour of California cycling race to Modesto last year. Tour officials liked what they saw in Modesto and agreed to stop here in February in the 2009 race.

She said she volunteered at the relays as a teenager and was disappointed to see the event's backers announce that it would move on after 67 years in Modesto.

Olsen's aiming for a commission that would be made up of residents, businesses and sincere sports fans. She's scheduled to speak about her proposal at Tuesday's City Council meeting.

"Modesto's participation as a host city for the Amgen Tour of California serves as a great example of what our community can do when it is truly inspired and mobilized," she said. "My hope is that by creating a sports commission, we will be able to harness that energy and provide great sporting events that benefit the economy and the quality of life here in Modesto"
