A nine-minute police chase early Saturday led to the capture of a 43-year-old man with an outstanding narcotics-related warrant carrying a bail of $515,000.
Ceres police responded to the 1300 block of Grover Drive about 3 a.m. for a report of a suspicious man walking through a neighborhood that recently has seen a lot of burglaries, Sgt. Chris Perry said.
Officer Chris Melton tried to stop a truck after he saw someone matching the man's description get into its passenger seat. As Melton approached the truck, it sped away, Perry said.
During the chase, where speeds hit 50 mph on residential streets, the passenger jumped out and escaped over a wall.
Melton followed the truck to an apartment complex at 1625 Richland Ave. where a canoe strapped to the vehicle fell off. The driver ran into the complex, but Melton found a driver's license in the truck belonging to Steve M. Pierce.
Later that day, police acting on a tip arrested Pierce on suspicion of felony evading and in connection with the warrant.
Police found items in the truck they believe may be stolen.
Pierce is in custody in Stanislaus County Jail, with bail set at $525,000.
