1 Jazz dance

Dance students from Modesto Junior College, Johansen and Central Catholic high schools, 5,6,7,8 Dance Studio and Backstage Dance Company perform to jazz music in "Jam n' Jive '08 — Blue Smoke Cafe." The numbers are performed to the music of the Glenn Miller Band, Miles Davis, Tony Bennett, Diana Krall and Peggy Lee.

Randy Owen brings mountain music to the Gallo Center

2 Body & Soul

Argentine pianist Ingrid Fliter joins the Modesto Symphony Orchestra for its "Body & Soul" concert. Musical selections are Maurice Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major, Camille Saint-Saens' Symphony No. 3 "Organ" and Malcolm Arnold's Tam O'Shanter Overture.

3 Dance theater

4 Celebrate culture

Learn about the Assyrian culture at the newly relocated Assyrian Chaldean Festival. The event, which has been held the last 17 years in San Jose, has now moved permanently to the Central Valley. Festivities include Mediterranean food for purchase, folk dancing, children's games and more.

5 Peppery sounds

Students at California State University, Stanislaus, are coming back to a peppery event. Associated Students Inc.'s annual Welcome Back Students show features Hawaiian reggae-ska-rockers Pepper and Florida's pop-punkers The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. Nationally touring act Pepper is an area favorite having played sold-out shows at X-Fest and the Fat Cat Music House Lounge. Pepper also has shared billing with superstars like 311 and Snoop Dogg.

6 Alabama singer

Randy Owen came to fame as lead singer of the country band Alabama, which racked up a slew of hits in the 1980s and 1990s, including "Tennessee River" and "You've Got the Touch." Now, he's embarking on a solo career with the album "One on One," due out in November.

7 Greek fest

Immerse yourself in Greek culture at the 44th annual Greek Food Festival. Enjoy a dine-in or carry-out Greek dinner, as well as live traditional music and dancing. The popular event draws close to 9,000 people each year. Festivalgoers also can browse a Greek coffeehouse and bakery, go on church tours and shop at the Agora (marketplace).
