Reading time, two minutes:

There are no oars in the water these days for Modesto's Olympic gold medalist Erin Cafaro. She deserves the rest along with the homecoming celebration for her Monday afternoon at Graceada Park.

  • The food to be served that day: hot dogs, ice cream and apple pie. Sounds right.

  • Got queasy reading about it: two hurdlers from Jamaica implicated in a steroid ring. This doesn't implicate Usain Bolt and the sprinters, but ...
  • Curious trend: increasing TV coverage of high school football. I enjoy prep football because, among other reasons, it usually is NOT televised.
  • Coming up: the Modesto Quarterback Club beginning another season of Monday luncheons Sept. 15 at Hero's.
  • A bad idea corrected: Doug Severe staying as Beyer High football coach, after all.

If running back Toby Gerhart enjoys another big game, Stanford has a shot tonight at Arizona State.

  • And bring your calculator: Texas Tech at Nevada and Turlock QB Colin Kaepernick.
  • One week away but still worth a comment: Wisconsin deserves credit for being one of the few BCS schools willing to travel to No. 21 Fresno State.
  • Cal lost six of its last seven Pac-10 games last year, which adds importance to today's trip to Washington State.
  • Good start: The Pac-10 went 5-1 in nonconference games last week.
  • From here, one reason why Joe Paterno, 81, refuses to step down at Penn State: Alabama's Bear Bryant coached his last game in 1983 and died 28 days later.
  • Vanderbilt has beaten South Carolina two consecutive years. Has Steve Spurrier lost the zip on his fastball?
  • ESPN can do better than propping up Lou Holtz as "Dr. Lou."
  • The Big 10's opponents today include Eastern Illinois, Marshall, Eastern Michigan, Miami (Ohio), Northern Colorado, Ohio, Florida International, Murray State and Duke. Cupcakes, anyone?
  • The LPGA Tour has backed off its English-only program. Just what golf needed: more charges of discrimination.
  • European captain Nick Faldo passed over the inspirational leader Darren Clarke for the Ryder Cup. Blunder No. 1.

Why not: JaMarcus Russell passes to Javon Walker for JaRaiders.

  • We knew all along the starting quarterbacks Sunday would be Kurt Warner for the Cardinals and J.T. O'Sullivan for the 49ers. Yeah, sure.
  • Not clear on the concept: The Bengals' Marvin Lewis preaches about improving his team's character and then re-signs Chris Henry.
  • One QB who deserves some success in a tough spot: Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay.
  • Ex-Giant Michael Strahan received a $75,000 appearance fee at the Super Bowl champions' opener. Wonder how much John Wooden gets for attending UCLA games.
  • Dick Vitale is inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as a "contributor." Bluster aside, he's earned it.
  • Football season couldn't begin faster for the Giants and Athletics.
  • Can't imagine a better name for a pitcher than Josh Outman of the A's.
  • Sad: Marion Jones is free ... but still disgraced.
  • Before one gets the wrong impression: A city source says Modesto's three-time Olympian Suzy Powell also will be honored in the very near future.
  • Cafaro's latest schedule: Oprah Winfrey, the Giants, the governor and a homecoming.
  • It's good to win the gold.
