Yesteryears

50 YEARS AGO: For seven months in 1958, major crime in Modesto had fallen below the previous year's levels. For two of the months, the drop was greater than 15 percent. The city's major crime level for July was 11.2 percent below the figure for July 1957.

25 YEARS AGO: A huge slab of granite fell from a cliff onto Highway 41 in Yosemite National Park, closing a popular route into the park. No cars were struck when the rock crashed onto the pavement during a light rain shower.
