This story appeared on Page A-1 of The Modesto Bee on Oct. 2, 1968.

Two newborn babies were found abandoned last night and this morning, one on Warnerville Road near Oakdale and the other on a city parking lot in Manteca.

Both of the infants are reported in good condition in hospitals. Stanislaus County Sheriff's deputies and Manteca police officers are seeking information on the identity of the babies.

Mrs. Frank Stella of 6849 Crabtree Road told sheriff's deputies she found the baby girl lying at the side of Warnerville Road near Emery Road east of Oakdale. She said she took the baby, wrapped in a sweatshirt, to a nearby residence and telephoned the sheriff's office.

Home Delivery

The infant had not been delivered in a hospital but she appeared healthy. Authorities said the infant's umbilical cord had been tied with twine. She has brown hair and eyes and appears to be of Mexican descent.

The baby weighs 6 pounds 4 ounces and is 20 inches long. She was admitted to Scenic General Hospital, Modesto, as "Jane Doe, birthdate unknown."

Manteca Police Capt. Leonard Taylor issued an appeal today for information about the mother or parents of an infant boy, 12-24 hours old who was found in a pasteboard box last night on a city parking lot here.

Capt. Taylor said the baby, found about 6 o'clock on the parking lot in the 100 block of South Maple Street, was in "good shape" as the result of proper delivery but that the infant suffered numerous ant bites on the forehead and top of the head.

After examination and treatment at the Manteca Hospital, the baby was transferred to San Joaquin General Hospital.

Sleeping Garment

The infant, who weighs 6 pounds 14 ounces and is 16 1/2 inches long, was dressed in a clean white sleeping garment and was covered with a blanket, Capt. Taylor said. No identification papers or other articles were in the box, he said.

Capt. Taylor said it is believed the baby had been abandoned about three or four hours before its discovery by the police at the edge of the parking lot.

He urged that anyone having information about the baby's identity or that of its parents to call him at 823-2101. Capt. Taylor emphasized that callers may use an anonymous name in furnishing the information.
