Fair's popularity reaches new high

If you went to the Stanislaus County Fair this year, you weren't alone -- not by a long shot. Attendance figures showed 232,843 visitors to the 2008 Stanislaus County Fair over its 10-day run, which concluded Sunday. The 2008 numbers marked this as the highest attendance in more than 15 years, officials said. Attendance in 2007 was 219,008. "In a sluggish economy, families seek out the best value for their limited dollars," said Tony Leo, fair chief executive officer. "Our community recognizes that the nominal price of fair admission includes more family entertainment value than any event around."

West Nile spraying to cover new areas

The San Joaquin County Mosquito & Vector Control District is conducting more aerial and ground spraying efforts. In addition to the areas announced earlier, around Stockton and Escalon, spraying is scheduled in an expanded area of rural Escalon; east Ripon; and parts of Manteca, Tracy and Lodi. Spraying is set in the evening and early morning, when mosquitoes are most active, through Friday. For more information, go online to www.sjmosquito.org.

Yesteryears

75 YEARS AGO: Funny-looking cave men, even some cave flappers, and strange monsters and birds of a million years ago started appearing in The Bee when "Alley Oop" joined the comics page.

50 YEARS AGO: Six Stanislaus County accordion students were participating in the Western States Accordion Festival in Long Beach Municipal Stadium. The students were Jerry Ebie, Kathleen Hector, David Whitmore, Bette Bradley and Judith Graves, all of Modesto, and Sharon Larson of Turlock.

25 YEARS AGO: Melora Hardine of TV's "The Family Tree" and Paul King of "Dolly Parton Meets the Kids" were joining skaters in the eighth annual Muscular Dystrophy Skate-a-Thon, which was held at Roller King on Briggsmore Avenue in Modesto.
