Citing "significant West Nile virus activity," the San Joaquin County Mosquito and Vector Control District will spray for mosquitoes around Stockton, Manteca and Escalon this week. Aerial spraying is scheduled in Stockton from 8 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday and in Manteca from 8 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday. The targeted area in Manteca will be from Lathrop Road south to the Stanislaus County line, between McKinley Avenue and Main Street. Thursday from 5:30 to 7 a.m. ground spraying will be conducted near Escalon from Skiff Road south to Victory Road, between Lone Tree Road and Highway 120. 50 YEARS AGO: Mary Traver of Patterson was crowned the 1958 Miss Stanislaus District Fair queen in front of the grandstand at the opening ceremonies of the fair. Traver, a Patterson Union High School senior, was chosen from among eight Future Farmers of America chapter sweethearts.
25 YEARS AGO: Jon Rivera of Waterford placed sixth in the triple jump during the TAC Junior Olympics held at Duke University in Durham, N.C. Rivera, a sophomore at Oakdale High, leaped 42 feet, 9½ inches among the field of 20. -- Karen Aiello
