Some church members used X-Fest as a chance to save souls.

Rock bands played worship music on a small stage sponsored by Shelter Cove Community Church, while other church members offered prayers. Outside the festival entrance near Brenden Theatres, about a half-dozen people from area churches carried brightly colored signs saying "God is angry with the wicked every day," "Trust Jesus/ Turn from Sin/ Forgiveness is Wonderful" and other slogans.

Harvey Geronimo, who attends Calvary Chapel, said he and other church members carry signs on other days in Modesto, not just during X-Fest.

"God has given us a commission to preach the gospel to all creatures," he said.

Geronimo's wife, Angel, said reaction to their efforts was mixed.

"Some people don't want to hear the truth," she said. "They think we're out here for hateful reasons, but we're out to preach God's love before it's too late."
