Modesto police officers were involved in a shooting in Empire on Friday night while assisting Stanislaus County sheriff's deputies in finding a missing 15-year-old Empire girl.

No one was injured, and the girl was located. According to a Modesto Police Department report, officers were helping deputies check out a report that the girl was being held hostage at a home in the 200 block of South Abbie Street. The girl had been reported as a runaway several days earlier, according to the police report.

Deputies met outside with a 19-year-old man from the home, and determined that the girl was not being held hostage. She agreed to come outside and meet with officers, the report says.

When three Modesto police officers drove down Abbie Street to contact the girl, a shot was fired at them, according to the report. The officers returned fire, and a man was seen fleeing.

A Modesto officer on Santa Fe Avenue saw a man running from the area and confronted him in an open field west of Santa Fe, near the railroad tracks. The officer fired at least one shot before taking the man into custody. No one was hit by any of the shots fired.

Several subjects have been detained and the girl was taken into protective custody. Detectives from the Sheriff's Department and the Modesto Police Department are investigating. The names of the officers involved are being withheld for 24 hours, according to Police Department policy.
