Downey High principal picked

last updated: July 15, 2008 04:46:04 AM

La Loma Junior High School Principal Mike Henderson is the new Downey High School principal.

Henderson's appointment was made at Monday's Modesto City Schools board meeting. He replaces Phil Alfano, who left Downey this summer to become an assistant superintendent at Patterson Joint Unified School District.

Henderson has been principal at La Loma for three years. Before that, he spent two years as La Loma's assistant principal and eight years as an English teacher at Sierra High School in Man- teca.

He earned his bachelor's degree in English from California State University, Stanislaus, and his master's degree in educational management from the University of La Verne.

Superintendent Arturo Flores said Henderson would be great at his new post. Henderson's salary was not available Monday night.

Henderson was one of 11 applicants for the position. A panel screened the candidates and three finalists were forwarded to Flores and his Cabinet. Flores made a recommendation to the board.

Downey is one of seven high schools in the district.

Officials will begin a search for a junior high principal this week after a possible shift of principals between junior highs.
