MAN PLANNING SUICIDE TALKED DOWN: A 22-year-old man sat perched atop a parking garage Friday night in the 800 block of 12th Street in Modesto, waiting for fireworks to begin exploding so he could end his life amid the spectacular display, police said. Passers-by notified police about 8 p.m. that the man, whose name police would not release, looked as if he were about to jump, said police spokesman Sgt. Craig Gundlach. Police responded with a hostage negotiator who talked the man down. The man was taken to Stanislaus Behavioral Health Center.
PAROLEE ARRESTED AFTER PURSUIT: Modesto police said they had to drag a man wanted on a parole violation out of the bushes and through the mud near a river after he refused to come out Saturday. Police spokesman Sgt. Craig Gundlach said Louie Ramos, 42, was believed armed and dangerous, but nothing was found on him when officers handcuffed him about 11:45 a.m. Gundlach did not have any information on the parole violation. Police also arrested Judith Rosenthall, 56, of Turlock on suspicion of felony evading police and hit and run. Rosenthall was driving the vehicle in which Sgt. Al Brocchini spotted Ramos, police said. Brocchini saw Ramos in the passenger seat of a 2002 silver Mitsubishi on Standiford Avenue and signaled for the driver to pull over. Instead, a 15-minute pursuit ensued and Rosenthall headed for country roads. She slowed on Grayson Road and Ramos jumped from the car, police said. He headed for the marshy area of a river. Rosenthall went home, where she later was arrested. Officer Bill Jones and his dog Kane helped find Ramos. He refused to come out, police said, so Kane went in and bit Ramos on the shoulder. After a struggle, police said, they got Ramos into custody.
