Wrongful death trial for Peterson delayed
Scott Peterson's civil court trial was pushed back after a motion to continue the trial was filed Friday. Lawyers will meet in Stanislaus County Superior Court on July 21, when Judge Roger Beauchesne will set a new trial date. The wrongful death lawsuit filed by Peterson's former in-laws was planned to begin July 8 and should last about five weeks. Peterson was convicted of murdering his wife, Laci, and unborn son, Conner, then dumping her body in San Francisco Bay during a Christmas Eve 2002 fishing trip. The jurors said he should die, but the verdicts have been appealed.
Spoof of Spears a hit on reality show
Former Modesto and Sonora resident Derrick Barry is the latest sensation on the NBC reality series "America's Got Talent." The 2001 Beyer High School graduate floored, and fooled, the judges with his Britney Spears dance routine last week. The 24-year-old performs his Spears female impersonation in the Las Vegas show "An Evening at La Cage" at the Riviera Hotel and Casino. His routine was enough to move him to the next round of the reality competition, held in Las Vegas. "America's Got Talent" airs at 9 p.m. today on NBC.

Yesteryears
75 YEARS AGO: John Stolp, a Modesto Junior College high jumper, was chosen to compete in the National Amateur Athletic Union track meet in Chicago. He would compete for the San Francisco Olympic Club. Twice during the year, Stolp cleared more than 6 feet 3½ inches, making him a strong possibility for placing at the national meet.
50 YEARS AGO: Two traffic regulations were adopted by the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors. The county prohibited parking on South Seventh Street in the vicinity of the Modesto Livestock Commission Yard. Also, the speed limit on Geer Road from Twentieth Century Boulevard to the Turlock city limit was reduced to 25 mph.
25 YEARS AGO: Nick Petrulakis, a senior at Davis High School, was selected as the 1983-84 student representative to the Modesto City Schools Board of Education.
