MAN ALLEGEDLY TAKES GIRL'S PURSE: An unidentified man robbed a 17-year-old girl of her purse Wednesday morning in north Modesto while she waited for a bus to take her to summer school, police said. The suspect did not brandish a weapon, and the girl was not injured during the robbery, said Modesto police Sgt. Craig Gundlach. Police did not release her name to ensure her safety. The robbery occurred about 6:30 a.m. at a bus stop on Hemminger Way, between Dalton Way and West Rumble Road. Police described the suspect as a male 17 to 20 years old, standing about 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighing about 120 pounds. The suspect had brown eyes and was wearing a black sweat shirt with brown checkered shorts. Gundlach said the suspect approached the victim and grabbed her purse. She first resisted, holding her purse tightly, but the suspect hit her arms. Gundlach said she let go and the suspect fled west on Hemminger with the purse. Officers searched the area, but they did not find the suspect. Modesto police asked anyone with information about this robbery to call CrimeStoppers at 521-4636. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.

TRAINING BURN AT DON PEDRO: Firefighters will be conducting a training burn on the north side of Don Pedro Reservoir at Bonds Flat Road this morning, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The burn is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. and end at 1 p.m., and about nine acres of grass will be burned during the exercise, according to Cal Fire. This training burn has two objectives. The first is to improve the firefighting capabilities by allowing firefighters to practice numerous techniques. The second is to clear dry vegetation from the area as a safety precaution for the Fourth of July fireworks event at Don Pedro Reservoir. Three Cal Fire engines and a Tuolumne County engine will be used in the training exercise. After the burn operation is complete, firefighters will remain on scene for patrol and mop-up operations until the fire is completely out. Cal Fire Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit Chief Mike Noonan said the burn will proceed as scheduled as long as resources are available and temperatures, humidity and winds remain favorable.
