The Modesto City Council on Tuesday:
- Welcomed new City Manager Greg Nyhoff. The meeting was Nyhoff's first. He started work for the city Monday. Nyhoff succeeds George Britton, who retired in January. Acting City Manager Jim Niskanen returned to his post as the city's Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods director.
The council unanimously:
Hired an Arizona consultant to provide training for customer service employees in utility billing. Shibumi Consulting can earn $100,000 a year under the contract
Adopted a $37.25 charge for each utility customer who becomes delinquent on his or her bills. The charges are meant to recover the city's costs in following up on late accounts.
Raised the city's returned check fee to $25 from $10
Set aside federal grants to buy a 1.7-acre parcel in the 400 block of Downey Avenue for an affordable housing project. The city plans to spend $292,000 on the property.
Hired Bond Blacktop of Union City to conduct $262,497 worth of street maintenance
Awarded an additional $175,600 worth of work to Avail Technologies of State College, Pa., which won a $948,000 contract from the city last year to install a computer-aided dispatch system for Modesto's bus systemIn addition, the council met in closed session to discuss:
Contract negotiations with three city unions, the Modesto City Employees Association, the Modesto Confidential and Management Association and the Modesto Police Non-Sworn Association
Buying property at Ninth and D streets
