3 schools honor graduates tonight

Three schools in the Northern San Joaquin Valley will be honoring graduates today:

Oakdale Charter School, 7 p.m., River Oak Grace Church, Oakdale

Alternative Education (Oakdale), 7 p.m., River Oak Grace Church, Oakdale

Denair Charter Academy, 7:30 p.m., Denair High Stadium

Child left in car; mother arrested

A Sonora mother was arrested after leaving her baby in her luxury sport utility vehicle with the engine running and air conditioner on for nearly half an hour while she was in a salon. Sheriff's officials said the 8-month-old was not injured. Page B-2

50 YEARS AGO: Write-in candidate John Hopkins was elected student body president at Downey High School in Modesto.

25 YEARS AGO: Two loud explosions were heard in the basement of the Stanislaus County Jail after a main power generator blew up. Jailers and other law enforcement personnel thought bombs were going off. Six hours before the explosions, a bomb threat had been telephoned in to the district attorney's office. No one was hurt in the generator explosions. -- Karen Aiello
