Patterson says no to pot dispensaries

The Patterson City Council says it doesn't want medical marijuana dispensaries in the West Side community. The council voted Tuesday to adopt an ordinance to ban such businesses. The move came after Patterson's temporary moratorium on dispensaries expired. Police Chief Tyrone Spencer said the permanent ordinance is the best way to deal with the "long-term" possibility of dispensaries opening in the city. The cities of Newman, Riverbank, Turlock and Ceres have passed similar temporary ordinances; Modesto has banned "pot clubs" outright. Patterson's ordinance must pass another vote before becoming law.

Another endangered fish in the delta?

Federal authorities will consider whether to designate another delta fish for protection under the Endangered Species Act after a sharp population decline last year. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Tuesday that it will review the status of the longfin smelt to determine whether it is a threatened or endangered species. The 4-inch-long fish is native to the Sacramento- San Joaquin Delta. Last year, it registered its lowest population count in four decades of monitoring. Environmental groups requested a review in August. The longfin's cousin, the delta smelt, has been listed as a threatened species since 1993.
