Modesto

MEMORIAL RIDE FOR SOLDIER: The fourth annual Memorial Ride for Cpl. Michael D. Anderson Jr. will be held Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. from Mitchell's Modesto Harley-Davidson. The ride honors all veterans, and is named for Anderson, who was the first area resident killed in the Iraq war. Anderson was killed in combat Dec. 14, 2004, in Fallujah. The ride is from the Modesto dealership to Jamestown Harley-Davidson, and includes live music and a barbecue. Memorial shirts are available. ITALIAN DINNER NIGHT: The Modesto Fraternal Order of Eagles 2143 will host an "Italian Night Dinner" on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the local aerie, 126 Camellia Way. Tickets are $15, and proceeds will go to the scholarship fund for local students. Past dinners have raised more than $2,000 for local scholarships. To reserve tickets, call 577-2298.

SENIOR/CAREGIVER INFORMATION DAY: The second annual Ombudsman, Catholic Charities Senior Information Day will be Saturday at Graceada Park, 410 Needham St. Forty information booths will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Guest speakers include Peggy Osborn, from the state attorney general's office, speaking on medical fraud and elder abuse. Jose Michel, from Adult Protective Services, and Pat Fantazia, ombudsman for long-term care, also will speak. Speakers will start at 10:15 a.m. A free barbecued hot dog lunch will be served.

LAST YOKUTS GROUP/SIERRA CLUB MEETING UNTIL FALL: The monthly meeting of the Yokuts Group/Sierra Club will be held May 16 and will cover nature inspired poetry. The program is Earthwords II: An audience-participation program of nature-inspired prose and poetry. Bring your favorite passage. The evening begins with a 6:45 p.m. refreshment and socializing time, followed by the program at 7. It is free and nonmembers are welcome. OVARIAN CANCER MEETING: More than 100 women will attend the first bilingual/bicultural "Te de Esperanza" (High Tea of Hope) to learn more about the deadliest of gynecologic cancers. The event will be held Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the home of Virginia Madueño, vice president of the Ovarian Cancer Alliance and a Riverbank City Council member. The event will feature guest speaker Maria Verbeck, an ovarian cancer survivor, and important information on the symptoms and risks associated with ovarian cancer. The event will feature 10 hostesses who will be considered the Circle of Hope for bringing more women together to learn about ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is the fifth-leading cause of death among women. The mission of the OCA is to save lives by educating and empowering women about ovarian cancer. Sonora

ONLINE FAMILY RESEARCH: The Tuolumne County Genealogical Society will hold Part 2 of a presentation about Internet Web sites that are helpful to genealogy researchers. The meeting is Monday at 7 p.m. at the Tuolumne County Library on Greenley Road in Sonora. Pat Perry, society vice president, invites those who want to learn more about how to research genealogy online. Refreshments will be served.

Merced

CIVILIAN HANDGUN SAFETY: The Merced College Continuing Education department will offer a gun safety class the next two Fridays from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Merced College Vocational Building 140, and on May 17, from 8 a.m. to noon. The classes will held at the firing range. Students must attend all three sessions. Students will learn gun nomenclature, loading, cleaning, safety and the law regarding the use of deadly force to protect life or property. The course includes classroom instruction and time at the firing range with instructor Sam Samra. A certificate of completion will be issued to those who successfully complete the class. A material fee of $15 will be paid to the instructor on the first night of class. The noncredit class is open to adults over the age of 18. For more information, call 381-6540.
