FILL THE BOOT: Firefighters from the northern San Joaquin Valley to the Sierra will take to the streets today and on May 24 and 31 to fill their fire boots with donations from motorists to support "Jerry's kids" and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., look for firefighters asking motorists to drop a donation into their boots.

YOU GO GIRL! Women who served in the armed forces will have a luncheon devoted just to them. "We want to honor all women veterans," said Ruby Brawley, commander of Modesto's American Legion post. She said the lunch, which is free for and exclusive to female veterans, will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Legion hall, 1001 S. Santa Cruz Ave. in Modesto. Transportation can be arranged, and Brawley asks all of the servicewomen to bring pictures of themselves during active duty. For more information, call Brawley at 549-2867.

WALK FOR MS: The Northern California chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society will hold its annual Walk MS fund-raiser today at Downey Park. Walk MS is estimated to raise $2 million to support the fight against multiple sclerosis -- an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Walk MS participants will enjoy a 5K walk through Downey Park. A free lunch, raffle and live entertainment will be provided. PRAYER-BASED HEALING: Lorenzo Rodriguez will share his experience with prayer-based healing today at 2 p.m., in Spanish, and again in English at 3:30 in Graceada Park, Mancini Bowl. PFLAG EVENTS: Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays will hold its general support meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday. There will be a special Mother's Day program at 8 p.m. The May 20 meeting will be the Fun-For-All Bingo night scheduled for 7 p.m. The meetings are at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 324 College Ave.

ITALIAN DINNER NIGHT: The Modesto Fraternal Order of Eagles 2143 will host an "Italian Night Dinner" on May 10 at 7 p.m. at the local aerie, 126 Camellia Way. Tickets are $15, and proceeds will go to the scholarship fund for local students. Past dinners have raised more than $2,000 for local scholarships. To reserve tickets, call 577-2298.

REGISTER FOR SWIM CLASSES: The city will have early swim registration from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today in the Parks and Recreation office at 6707 Third St. Walk-in registration will begin Monday. Swim lessons are two weeks long, Monday through Thursday; classes include parent/baby, tiny tot, beginner levels 1 to 3, advanced beginner and intermediate swimmers.
