COUNTY HIRES NEW DIRECTOR: Christine Applegate has been appointed director of the Stanislaus County Community Services Agency. She currently is director of social services in Tehama County. She replaces Ken Patterson, who resigned last fall to take a job in Seattle. Applegate will oversee a budget of $253 million and a full-time staff of 940. The Community Services Agency includes social programs such as adult services, child and family services, and StanWORKS. Applegate has a master's degree in higher education administration from Southern Illinois University, and served as chief deputy director for the Glenn County Human Resource Agency. Her salary will be $147,680.

ARCHWAY ACADEMY CERTIFIED:

The California Charter Schools Association on Wednesday announced that Archway Academy Charter School in Modesto was among 17 schools named Certified Charter Schools for meeting the association's standards for academic achievement, ethical leadership, focus on increasing quality, responsible governance and fiscal accountability. Archway Academy is an independent study public high school at Valley Charter High School, operated by the Stanislaus County Office of Education. About 10 percent of all California charter schools are certified by the association. Other certified area schools are: Denair Charter Academy, Valley Charter High School in Modesto, Connecting Waters Charter School in Waterford, Hickman Charter School, Hickman Elementary and Hickman Middle School.
