The Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday:

  • Accepted $4.8 million from the State Department of Mental Health for housing services for homeless, mentally ill residents. The money will be assigned to the State Department of Mental Health, which will work with the California Housing Finance Agency to invest it. The goal is to provide the least restrictive housing possible and provide services to promote recovery.

  • Accepted a donation to establish Ryan's Reading Tree in the Children's Room at the Modesto Library. The project will turn the central column in the room into an artificial oak tree with surrounding benches to encourage young readers. The tree would honor Ryan Dickerson, who died last summer at age 18. Ryan was a supporter and user of the library, according to the staff report, and served as a prefect at the library's 2005 and 2007 Harry Potter children's events. The tree will cost $80,000, and the Ron and Lynn Dickerson family have pledged to match donations up to $40,000. Lynn Dickerson is a former president and publisher of The Modesto Bee.

  • Accepted a grant from United Way of Stanislaus County of about $500 to install two horseshoe pits at United Community Center and Park in Grayson. The horseshoe pits will be installed by the county Department of Parks and Recreation.
