Official: No change in home-schooling

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell said that despite a state appeals court ruling, he sees no reason to change the state's policies regarding home-schooled students. The 2nd District Court of Appeal ruled Feb. 28 that parents who home-school their children must have a teaching credential.

School fund-raiser donations sought

Donations are needed for John F. Kennedy School's spring garage sale fund-raiser. Operated by the Stanislaus County Office of Education, JFK School serves people with special needs from kindergarten through age 22. The fund-raiser is May 3 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the school, 1336 Stonum Road in Ceres. Proceeds from the sale will assist in purchasing items needed for JFK's annual spaghetti dinner. Donations can be dropped off Monday through Friday after 2:30 p.m. at the school. For more information, contact John Worsham at JFK, 765-0634.

Yesteryears

75 YEARS AGO: The cornerstone- laying ceremonies for Modesto's new $109,000 post office were held at the building at Twelfth and I streets. Superior Court Judge J.C. Needham, a pioneer resident of Modesto, delivered the principal address and a flag-raising ceremony was held.

50 YEARS AGO: The Stanislaus supervisors formally declared the week starting March 16 as National Library Week in this county. Supervisors invited all residents of the county to "form a closer acquaintance with the library, its branches, its resources and service."
