Children become poets

last updated: March 07, 2008 02:34:35 PM

The Kool Katz Poetry Festival has run all week at the Renaissance art magnet school, part of Walnut Elementary Education Center in Turlock. Here are just a few of the student-writen poems:

I see a little leprechaun
His hat and clothes are green

I will try to catch him
Before he sees me and screams!

— Isaac, kindergarten

My brother BJ is the best
He's big and strong and passes tests!

He gives me hugs and stomps on bugs
And that's why he gets all my loves!

— Micheila, kindergarten

Easter bunny, Easter bunny
What do you see?

I see a thousand Easter eggs
Right in front of me!

— Claire, kindergarten

Swimming

My favorite sport is swimming,
And I will tell you why.

My favorite stroke is Breaststroke,
But I don't really like Fly. (Butterfly)

Our workouts are hard,
Our coaches are nice.

We swim 3,000 yards,
Every single night.

Our coaches are;
Victor, Ryan, and Carly.

They walk very far,
Probably 300 yards.

Now you know why I like swimming,
The best sport of all,

Well in my opinion, of course,
For we swim in winter, summer, spring, and fall.

— Ruobing, 4th grade

Festival Dance

I watch as the Indians

do their dance

around the village fire

They look at me

I look at them

the next thing I know

I've joined the dance

It feels like the music

has carried me around

my feet cannot stop

But yet, they are aching

The dance has stopped

and we all sit down

I hope this can happen

once again

— Katelynn, 5th grade

Stars in the Moonlight

Stars in the moonlight,
shining so bright,
Down below me
a city in sight.

Getting ready for bed
a shooting star soars over my head,
the horses are led to the stables
no longer people are at the table.

Everyone is asleep
where the city lays
a canyon so deep,
the stars say goodnight moonlight,
Stars in the moonlight
Shining so bright
down below me
a city
In sight

— Jonathan, 5th grade

Animal Party

Rats party with bats,
In a hat that is fat.

Dogs part with frogs,
On a rock that is rockin'.

Cats party with rats
In a school that rules.

Bears party with the hares
In a fair.

Cows party with sows
In a barn made of yarn.

This is one wacky farm!

Changing the World

As I walk down the road I ask myself, "how can I change the world?

"Ah ha!" I say, "I've got it! I shall plant flowers around the world."

I went to Africa. I went to China.

I made a change

Where places once were dull brightness came

And when it did a feeling came up and said to me

"You did it!"

Yes, yes I did.

— Rebekah, 2nd grade

And our favorite ...

The Bee

Roses are red, violets are blue,
I like the Modesto Bee,
Do you?

Would you like it in a tree?
Then would you like the Bee?
Would you like it on origami?
And then would you like the bee?
Oh, please, please like the Modesto Bee.

I am writing this poem,
I'll let you be,
If you would read the Bee.

Oh, what did you say?
If I let you be you will read the Bee?

Ok,
I'll leave,
Bye!

— Zoie, 3rd grade
