Modesto City Schools has launched an identity theft prevention blog after officials learned that a computer stolen Monday from a Southern California data processing company contained the names, addresses, birth dates and Social Security numbers of Modesto City Schools' 3,500 employees.
The computer also held the personal information of 4,000 employees of Clovis schools, as well as workers at 15 other organizations.
Fullerton-based Systematic Automation Inc. prints customized statements for each district employee with a summary of health and other employee benefits. Systematic Automation has been under contract with Modesto City Schools since 1997.
No related cases of identity theft have been reported by employees of the Clovis or Modesto districts.
The computer and three monitors were stolen at 4:30 a.m. Monday in a "window-smash" burglary, according to the Fullerton Police Department.
