Free tax assistance in Weed-Seed area

Some people living in Modesto's Paradise South Weed and Seed/Housing Authority can get free tax preparation assistance. The service through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Center is for families with household incomes of less than $40,000. Trained and certified volunteers will be at the housing authority's Westview Gardens Community Center at 1701 Robertson Road. The Center will be open one evening per week from February through April. For an appointment plus information on which documents you will need to bring, call 557-2051.

Attendance Facts

In a continuing effort to raise awareness of the importance of school attendance and increase attendance rates, schools throughout Stanislaus County kicked off a second year of the "Every Day Counts" Attendance Campaign. After last year's campaign, 17 school districts in Stanislaus County reported improved attendance rates overall, with six of those attaining a half-percent increase or more.

Familiar morning voices back on air

The Modesto area woke up to some familiar voices on the radio Monday morning. Longtime B93.1 FM morning personalities Cruise N Good returned to the airwaves this week. Radio hosts Tammy Cruise and Angie Good were released from the station in December of 2006. On Jan. 1, Good took over as the station's new program director after the exit of Clear Channel Vice President Market Manager Gary Granger last month. Yesteryears

75 YEARS AGO: What was claimed to be the largest juniper tree in the world was located about 60 miles east of Sonora in the Stanislaus National Forest. The giant juniper was located by Edward V. Burgson, who measured the tree. It had a circumference of 61 feet 9 inches at the roots, and it was 90 feet high.

25 YEARS AGO: More than 200 private airplanes used the Modesto airport as a home base, with aircraft ranging from tiny Pitts Special aerobatic biplanes to a Citation corporate twin-jet. In addition, four helicopters were based there. -- Karen Aiello
