PICTURE THIS: With luck, a duck

Lucas Jr., left, and Opela take aim at ducks flying within range of their shotguns. Gynger waits for the command to bring back any downed fowl.

It’s early morning in a marshy area of Solano County, not far south of Suisun City. Tom Lucas Sr., Tom Lucas Jr. and Paul Opela, all of Modesto, and Labrador retrievers Gynger and Ruby are there for the ducks -- mallards, to be specific. They go by boat through the reeds to their blinds, where they wait for the birds. At just the right moment they fire, then release the dogs. Bee photographer Bart Ah You recently accompanied them on an outing to shoot them as they did their shooting.
