Modesto selects airport manager

An Arizona airport manager soon will take the top job at Modesto Airport. Jerome Thiele was hired to succeed William Latham, who has overseen Modesto Airport on an interim basis for more than a year. Thiele has more than 29 years of experience in airport administration at several posts, including Buckeye Municipal Airport in Arizona, Chippewa Valley Regional Airport in Wisconsin and Mason City Municipal Airport in Iowa. He has a bachelor's degree in airport administration from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, and has led state and regional airport associations in the Midwest.

Earthquake shakes Sierra Nevada

A magnitude 3.5 earthquake jolted the Sierra Nevada just outside Yosemite National Park Thursday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The temblor struck just after 9:30 a.m. about 11 miles southeast of Mammoth Lakes along the eastern edge of the park. A Mammoth Lakes police spokeswoman said no damage or injuries have been reported. The seismically active region is home to some of California's most popular mountain wilderness destinations.

Psych center now operated by DMC

It's official. Doctors Medical Center now operates the Stanislaus Behavioral Health Center, ending 13 years of county ownership of the acute psychiatric hospital. Page B-3

Yesteryears

50 YEARS AGO: With their newly developed running game and the passing game in full stride, the Modesto High School Panthers stayed on the prowl with a 12-7 victory over Franklin High School of Stockton. The Panthers found themselves on the short end of a 7-6 score at halftime, but managed to finish strong, amassing 388 yards for the game and pulling out the victory.

25 YEARS AGO: Lee G. Hampson of Modesto was elected to a second term as vice chairman of the executive council of the National World War II Glider Pilots Association during the group's reunion in Reno. The association was made up of surviving glider pilots who landed troops and supplies behind enemy lines in World War II. Out of 6,000 pilots, only 1,600 survived the war.
