BIRD SHOW: The Central California Cage Bird Club will host the 54th annual Canary and Finch show Saturday at the SOS Club,

819 Sunset Ave. The judging begins at 9:30 a.m. and will run throughout the day, with a full catalog of classes of canaries, from the intensely colored red factor birds to the yellow, white, green and grizzled colored birds. Singing canaries will be in a separate room to allow the judge to score their singing abilities. About 500 birds are expected to be exhibited. A full range of finches, from the zebras and society finches to the outrageously colored Lady Gouldians, also will be presented. Several rarer finches from Africa and Australia will be shown in this division. This is a West Coast show with birds from as far away as Oregon and Arizona. BLOOD DRIVE: Dan Gamel's Modesto RV Center will join with Delta Blood Bank and host a blood drive from 3 to 7 p.m. today at 4400 Salida Blvd., just off Highway 99. Gamel will host a harvest festival at the same time and offer hot dogs, drinks, face-painting and more.

IT'S THRILLS AND CHILLS TIME: The Associated Students of Modesto Junior College will present its second annual Halloween Carnival and Haunted House today from 5 to 10 p.m. in the Student Center, 435 College Ave. The event is appropriate for all ages and is open to the public. Tickets for games and entry to the haunted house will be 50 cents each or three for $1; food also will be available. The carnival will feature a variety of game booths. The haunted house, held in the Student Center lounge, will carry a pirate theme in keeping with MJC's pirate mascot. Attendees are encouraged to participate in the free costume contest. TREATS AT THE FARMERS MARKET: Come dressed in costume to the farmers market Saturday and enter the costume contest, parade and trick-or-treat event. Registration will be 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. at Booth 2. Children from infants through 11 years old are eligible for the costume contest and must be accompanied by an adult to participate. After the parade at 10 a.m., judges will select the top three costumes in three age brackets. First prize is a $20 gift card, second is a $10 gift card and third is a $5 gift card. A grand prize will be offered to the most creative parent-child costume combo. A third-grade class from El Vista Elementary School will present two 20-minute puppet shows on Halloween safety. FALL BIKE RIDE ALONG THE TUOLUMNE: Enjoy a crisp fall morning pedaling along the Tuolumne River, stopping to look for migrating salmon and exploring the flora and fauna that live along the river. Grab your bike and head to Beard Brook Park on Saturday at
