October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This week, Haven Women's Center of Stanislaus County marked the observance with its fourth annual Day of Unity at Modesto Junior College. Bee photographer Adrian Mendoza captured the event's activities, designed to mourn those who have died because of domestic violence, celebrate those who have survived and connect those who work to end violence. In October 1987, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed. In October 1994, the "Remember My Name" project was created as a national registry to increase public awareness of domestic violence deaths.

"Picture This" is a regular feature by Bee photographers.
