Boy shows up bruised, chained at Tracy gym

A bruised and emaciated 17-year-old boy showed up at a downtown Tracy gym Monday with a chain locked to his ankle, claiming he had just fled his captors, authorities said.

Dow drops nearly 680 on consumer spending worries

The reality that the nation is indeed in recession and that the downturn may well be prolonged sent Wall Street plunging Monday, hurtling the Dow Jones industrials down nearly 700 points and wiping out more than half of last week's big gains. All the major indicators fell more than 7 percent, with the Standard & Poor's 500 index down nearly 9 percent.

Fog slowing valley traffic

The fog that’s slowed traffic on area highways and roads has lifted somewhat this morning, and the California Highway Patrol are no longer “pacing” traffic in Merced and Stanislaus counties, according to CHP officer Tom Killian.
